March 27th; repeated to Peking No. 16 March 27th,

I have been asked by chairman of China Association and Associated British Committee to telegraph the following message to you, begins:-

"China Association and Associated British Committees, profoundly moved by persistent press reports to the effect that negotiations on extra- territoriality now following line calculated to deprive British subjects outside Shanghai of existing privileges. If this is correct they respectfully, but urgently, protest against such steps, which would be fraught with grave menace to security to persons, property and British trade. Furthermore, respect- fully emphasise overwhelming importance of maintain- ing conditions ( gr. und.) at Tientsin, the port of North China of which you recall the position fully explained in Advisory Committee's report of March 1927 and Committee's informal memorandum 26 Ends,
